The Laboratory of Applied Mass Spectrometry (LAMaS) at KU Leuven is a leading research facility specializing in cutting-edge metabolomics and proteomics, located on the Gasthuisberg campus in Leuven. We use several high-end mass spectrometers coupled to liquid/gas chromatography instruments to obtain a comprehensive metabolic and proteomic pattern of different sample types (e.g. body fluids, cell and tissue lysates) in a broad range of diseases (cancer, inflammation, neurodegeneration, etc.) which contribute to the development of mass spectrometry research and the discovery of novel markers and therapeutic targets. We are now seeking a skilled and motivated PhD student to join our dynamic team.

Project

For your PhD, you will develop novel methodologies for the use of isotopomers in tracer metabolomics. You will develop novel MS based technologies and apply these to clinically relevant disease models (cancer, neurodegeneration, inborn errors of metabolism, etc). You will be guided by a senior postdoc and Prof. B. Ghesquière.

Profile

  • Master's degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Bioinformatics or a related field;
  • Experience in performing metabolite identification, quantification, and characterization using mass spectrometry-based techniques is a plus but not mandatory;
  • Flexible and willing to learn new technologies;
  • Accurate and critical of your work and its implementation;
  • Work in a problem-solving manner;
  • Comfortable with computational softwares;
  • Enthusiastic, social, and with excellent communication skills (English is required);
  • Ability to work independently as well as to collaborate effectively in a team environment;
  • Eager to learn new skills (biochemistry, technology).

Offer

  • Very dynamic and (inter)national environment within one of the top research groups in the field of mass spectrometry;
  • At the core of "solving" relevant disease models in cancer, brain disorders and others;
  • Training in operating and keeping highly advanced mass spectrometers (e.g. LC-OrbiTRAP Lumos, Evosep-ZenoTOF) operational, giving you a unique profile;
  • Training in data analysis using various software programs (e.g. DIA-NN, Spectronaut);
  • Growth opportunities in your position;
  • A contract of 1 year, after a positive evaluation extendable with another 3 years;
